Local Area
Faja da Ovelha is an outlying village of Calheta, on the quieter side of town. Yet the ease of accessibility to the Via Rapide, means that the centre of activity around the Beach & Marina, is only one or two minutes further away than the popular but noisier district of Arco da Calheta.
The village sits forward on the coastline, bringing the breath taking Ocean views right to the front of the Villas.
Peace and quiet, but with easy accessibility.
Calheta (12 minutes gentle drive from the Villa) is the main centre for the district, but to most visitors will appear to be only the size of a village. There are a couple of Hotels with public restaurants, a good supermarket which stocks most necessities including a deli counter and bakery. Bank, cash machine and car hire are also here.
The Beach offers a safe man made beach of golden sand. The Marina, close by, has several waterfront restaurants which are open all day and offer a variety of cuisines.
An alternative beach is at Paul do Mar, five minutes downhill from the Villas. Very popular for Surfers.
Levada Walks - One of the most popular pursuits for visitors, is to walk along the Levadas. These are more than 1350 miles of irrigation canals known as Levadas. They have been constructed over the centuries, to bring collected rainfall at the top and North of the island, to the drier and lower areas on the south. There are footpaths alongside, and walks will range from moderate, to arduous, to vertigo. Many publications are available with maps and directions, and usually provide information on how easy or difficult is the walk. As most of Madeira is on a hillside, the views from the Levadas are amazingly panoramic, looking over large areas of hillside and Ocean. Guided walks are also available, but it is quite easy to organise yourself.
All our Villas are within a two or three minute walk to access Levada Nova da Calheta. This stretches over 40km and is the longest route of its kind in the Municipality of Calheta. While lengthy, altitude wise there isn’t much variation, with the levada flowing between 600 and 700 meters altitude.
